SUMMERFIELD CIVIC ASSOCIATION (SCA) - Tigard Oregon

Summerfield Women’s Golf Club

In 1975 the woman of Summerfield organized the Summerfield Women’s Golf Club (SWGC) run by a board elected by the membership.  For the past 33 years the group has carried a membership of approximately 120-150 annually.  Ladies play-days are Tuesday and Thursday mornings beginning in April and continuing through October.  The club is a member of the Oregon Golf Association.  There are a variety of activities which include visitations with other clubs, tournaments, luncheons, Member Guest Day and an annual Charity Tournament.

Summerfield Men’s Golf Club

The first documented competition in the Men’s Golf Club was in 1975.  The club is composed of between 150 to 180 members who play 9 holes on Wednesday and Friday mornings as well as various tournaments during the year.  The most popular tournaments are the Chapmans for the members and their wives or another lady of choice which are held the first Monday of the month from April through October with each followed by a catered dinner in the Clubhouse.  Other tournaments held by the club are two match play tournaments, the spring handicap tournament, a two man partners tournament, the club championship, a horse race and the final tournament of the year, the President’s Classic.  Prizes for the tournaments come from the entry fee for each golfer and separate from yearly club does of $25.00 for non Oregon Golf Association (OGA) members and $55.00 for OGA members.  The club also maintains a hole-in-one fund which rewards $100.00 for each hole-in-one recorded by a club member on the course.

The club governing board consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer plus 22 chairmen of the various tournaments and activities of the club.  This board meets monthly during the regular golf season from April through October which includes general club meetings June and October to regulate the daily and tournament play as well as develop the yearly budget for the Club.

New members are invited to join by contacting the club President or Treasurer as listed on the club board member list posted on the “Men’s Golf Club” bulletin board in the lounge area next to the pro shop in the lower level of the clubhouse.  Come join the fun.

 Marshall’s

In the early 1980’s Summerfield Golf Course had grown enough that Marshalls were deemed necessary for the betterment of the golf course.  In the beginning various individual men from the Summerfield Men’s Club took turns volunteering to be in charge and assigning days for other volunteers to serve.  Eventually in 2007, an actual committee of three men’s club members was formed  to serve as the person’s in charge and to make sure the monthly scheduling is distributed to others.

The Marshall’s have had a positive effect on the course as pace of play has been kept up, as well as, the vandalism has been kept down.

The Marshall’s are the Ambassadors of Summerfield, as they have a friendly outgoing attitude and encourage players on the course to have a great time while making sure the pace of play is in effect.

Some of the duties of the Marshalls are to rake traps if possible, pick up tee pieces and repair tee boxes.  One of the things that most Marshalls end up doing each day is finding golf clubs left on the course and returning them to the players as they tour the course.

Next time you are playing and a Marshall comes by, give him or her thanks for being here as they are all volunteers and do enjoy being on the course with you.

Starters

The Starters program begins May 15th and runs through October 15th.

The Starter has a copy of the tee times for the day and they make sure each player has a tag or a paid receipt.  Starters check dress code and see that each player gets off the tee on time. Starters have a radio communication between the Pro Shop and the first tee where the starter is stationed.

Greens Committee

The Greens Committee was formed as an advisory committee to the Civic Association Board of Directors in 1991.

Its purpose is to insure stability and continuity in planning and implementation of improvements relating to golf course activities.  In this capacity it has been serving as the liaison between the golfing community and the SCA Board of Directors.

The Greens Committee is composed of five Board members, the Presidents of the men’s and women’s golf clubs, a SCA board liaison member and the Golf Course Superintendent.

The Greens Committee has been part of the following decisions: to establish a bi-yearly sanding program for the course, widening, paving and sealing of the cart paths, protecting pedestrians by reconstructing the 6th tee, replanting trees where needed, removal of trees that endanger the Golf Course or the houses that surround it and many other short term and long term course improvements.

The beauty of the Summerfield Golf Course is an amenity we can all share.
